Before long they will pass on. Looking for a cure for their own mortality, the Strangers desert their own reality and come to Earth. Here they build a city, assembled like a goliath round labyrinth, that is never-endingly covered in murkiness. Every night at midnight, they stop all human development inside the city by will alone. Each human in the city all the while nods off. The Strangers, with the assistance of Dr. Schreber, then modify the recollections of the city's tenants, giving them totally new characters from week to week, or even everyday. The object of these tests is exemplified in the character of John Murdoch, in whom Dr. Schreber is going to embed the recollections of a serial executioner when Murdoch all of a sudden awakens. The Strangers wish to figure out whether a man, given the recollections of an executioner, will proceed on that same way; their theory is that the way to the human soul lies in our recollections.
